ON FORM striker, Mhlengi Cele, who plays for Thanda Royal Zulu, is targeting this season’s National First Division (NFD) golden boot.
The 29-year-old is currently leading the NFD scoring charts, with seven goals in five matches played so far, and he’s confident this season will be one of the best seasons
Cele rejoined Thanda this season after his two-year spell with Chippa United wasn’t successful as he was mostly featured in the Multichoice Diski Challenge team.
He made less than 10 appearances in the first team.
Cele is now showing what Chippa have lost by letting him go without giving him enough of a chance to prove himself.
Thanda coach, Roger Sikhakhane, has shown faith in the striker by signing him again at Thanda, as he was also signed by him at Chilli Boys while he was still there. Cele said his target this season is to score 30 goals and make sure the club get promoted to the Absa Premiership.
Said Cele: “I want to make history this season. My target is to score 15 goals in the first round matches and 15 in the second round. I know it’s not going to be easy, but the confidence is there. I can do it.
“It’s not only about me, but about the team getting promotion to the PSL.”
The KZN-born player told SunSport his decision to go back to where he started in the NFD was to help his home team get promotion.
Cele explained: “Coming back to Thanda isn’t like I ran out of options. I wasn’t getting enough game time at Chippa, then I thought I should go back home and help them.”
Thanda is yet to taste defeat in the NFD. Their next game is when they visit FC Cape Town on Saturday at NNK Rugby Stadium, in Parow, in Cape Town.
Kick-off is at 3.30pm.
“We’re going to Cape Town on our next game and it’s not going to be easy. We saw them handing our neighbours, AmaZulu, their first defeat. We don’t want to be victims. We’re going there to fight and not to take them for granted.
“We’ve played one game away in Mpumalanga and we drew. This time in Cape Town we must stamp our authority, make sure we collect maximum points home and away,” concluded Cele.
